Compact Fluorescent or CFL bulbs have been lauded in the past few years by the various media outlets as the new way to save energy as they are much more efficient (i.e. use less energy for the same amount of light) than standard incandescent light bulbs. What they don't mention a lot of the time are some of the things that you have to watch out for. The largest problem that CFLs have, that no one type of standard lighting (including LEDs) has is that....

CFLs contain mercury.

CFL's are hazardous

CFL bulbs contain small amounts of mercury which is toxic to individuals, especially those that are still developing, such as children and pregnant women. This is an inherent part of the technology so you will never get a CFL bulb that doesn't contain mercury. Most CFLs contain about 3-5mg of mercury. Here's some excerpts from Wikipedias article on mercury exposure

"A study has shown that acute exposure (4-8 hours) to calculated elemental mercury levels of 1.1 to 44 mg/m3 resulted in chest pain, dyspnea, cough, hemoptysis, impairment of pulmonary function, and evidence of interstitial pneumonitis.

"Acute exposure to mercury vapor has been shown to result in profound central nervous system effects, including psychotic reactions characterized by delirium, hallucinations, and suicidal tendency."

What should you do if you accidentally break a CFL bulb?

Here's some cleanup procedure excerpts taken from the Environmental Protection Agency's website (http://www.epa.gov/mercury/spills/index.htm):

* "Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out."
* "Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more."
* "Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder."
* "If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, - Remove the vacuum bag and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag."
* "The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming."
* "If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away."

So not only is it a pain to clean up, but it is not something that you want to have ever happen, even once. Supporters of CFLs claim that the bulbs are not fragile as are less likely to break, thus reducing the chance of needing such intricate procedures to clean them up. The fact that they are in the house or office, means that there will always be that possibility. As recently as February of 2008, the state of Maine did a study on handling broken CFLs and the precautions you need to take when disposing of them. Other problems that CFLs have include:

They are less efficient than LEDs - CFLs, despite their efficiency, are still only about half as efficient than LEDs. A 10W LED bulb gives about the same amount of light as a 20W CFL bulb.

They have an undesirable form factor - CFL bulbs aren't exactly appealing to the eye and currently can't replace bi-pin halogen bulbs (MR16 and GU10) typically used in many track lighting applications.

They have a shorter lifespan - The life of a CFL is significantly shorter if it is only turned on for a few minutes at a time: In the case of a 5-minute on/off cycle the lifespan of a CFL can be up to 85% shorter, reducing its lifespan to the level of an incandescent lamp. The US Energy Star program says to leave them on at least 15 minutes at a time to mitigate this problem. (LEDs can be cycled on and off with no problem and work better in cold temperatures.)

Warm Up Time - CFLs takes a perceptible time to achieve full brightness, and can take much longer in very cold temperatures.

Not Fully Dimmable - Dimmable CFL have emerged, but there have been reports of buzzing and color shifting while dimming as well as a limited range of dimmability. Most LED bulbs are not dimmable at the moment, but the ones that are, are fully dimmable and do not buzz. View here dimmable LED bulbs that stock .

For some time now, the talk of lighting has been how to further move away from incandescent bulbs to more environmentally sound options. The average consumer has undoubtedly been pushed towards the direction of fluorescent lamps (more commonly known as compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs). But CFLs should not be your option. The lesser talked about choice is LED. The most effective white LED lamp rivals fluorescent s in terms of efficacy and performance. But as with any good product, there is much more to LED bulbs than just how effective it can be.

A quality T8 LED lamp is going to give you a well-combined mixture of high efficacy, name brand LEDs, excellent thermal management and stylish optical design. A stylish design may seem like more of a luxury rather than a crucial part of the product. Wouldn’t it make more sense to go for a little less sophistication to save a couple dollars? In a different situation that may be a valid case, but not here. A T8 LED lamp using even the best LEDs available will not be nearly as efficient in a poorly designed lamp. And with less efficiency you get a lamp with less life expectancy than a T8 fluorescent lamp.

Of course, you’ll want the life of your LED replacement lamp to last as long as it can. This is what designers strive for when making the lamps. However, with such a small sample size of years, the lighting industry hasn’t been able to get as much direct experience with long-term performance and reliability of the T8 LED replacements as it has been able to with other lamps. So for now, the life of a T8 LED replacement lamp is not reflective of the estimated LED life.

The life of a T8 LED replacement lamp is a major part of the power supply, operating temperatures, thermal management, materials and electrical and material interfaces. Essentially, you can’t short change one component and still expect to have a great replacement lamp. Everything is important. How should you go around finding a reliable T8 LED replacement lamp? Here are some key things to look for:

* The use of high quality LEDs from brand suppliers who publish reliable data.
* Superior heat sink design to dissipate heat, minimizing T8 LED replacement lamp temperature (for example, board, case, or solder joint temperature) as low as possible.
* Optical specification from independent testing laboratory or manufacturer in-house testing.
* A manufacturer warranty that is comparable to a traditional fluorescent lamp (it will vary depending on the application under consideration).
* Any test data available about the longer term performance of T8 LED replacement lamp.

Common T8 LED replacement lamp features a linear array of 5mm DIP LEDs (suitable for indication applications, ranging from 60 to 400 LEDs per lamp), with airtight clear tubular plastic or glass covers as heat sink and diffuser, and an integrated driver (non-isolated constant voltage type). But there is a problem here. Plastic and glass are not what you’ll want to use if you want good heat conduction materials. Using these materials in the design will cause heat buildup inside the tube, depreciating lumen at a much faster rate, thus consequently shortening the useful life of a T8 LED replacement lamp.

In contrast, AGEC T8 LED replacement lamp features a linear array of imported high quality SMD LEDs (ranging from 30 to 88 LEDs per lamp), with a patented design of aluminum housing as heat sink, stripped PC cover as diffuser and UL listed integrated driver (isolated constant current type). In short, you’ll have a much more effectively designed T8 LED replacement that will give you a longer life span. And when it comes down to it, you’ll want the most effective and long-lasting product you can get.

NORTHBROOK, Ill., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- UL Environment, Inc., a global leader in environmental evaluation and certification, today announced initiation of a collaborative effort to develop sustainability standards for indoor and outdoor lighting. These standards will assist consumers, designers, architects and building operators in identifying more sustainable options for interior and exterior light fixtures, LED modules and related lighting components. The standards will address entire luminaires, including reflector, aperture, outer shell and connection to a power source. The standards will be based on environmental assessment of a product's entire life cycle, from raw materials to manufacture, use and disposal.

"According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an average household dedicates 11 percent of its energy budget to lighting," said Stephen Wenc, president of UL Environment, Inc. "LED modules alone have potential to reduce lighting electricity demand in the U.S. by one third and deliver savings of $265 billion by 2027—but lighting solutions can go beyond energy and cost savings. This effort supports the development of more sustainable options for consumers based on a holistic evaluation of environmental performance in a variety of areas beyond efficiency."

UL Environment's sustainability standards will consider environmental elements such as energy efficiency and product materials, manufacturing process and recyclability. The standards will set minimum environmental requirements and create a progressive and tiered structure that makes it possible for manufacturers to highlight their sustainability achievements.

"Sustainability is a consideration of growing importance for lighting designers and engineers," said Terry McGowan, Director of Engineering for the American Lighting Association. "Companies have long embraced energy efficiency as an environmental benefit, but the industry has lacked guidance on how to develop and incorporate a truly sustainable option for lighting. This standards effort will go a long way towards defining the sustainability characteristics of our industry and all the industries that rely on lighting for operations."

Development of the standards will draw upon input from UL Environment's Standard Technical Panels (STPs) comprised of stakeholders such as manufacturers, government entities, non-governmental organizations and consumer interest groups.

This standards effort continues UL's lighting industry leadership, which includes the development and publication of LED Safety Standard UL 8750 in late 2009. UL Environment expects initial drafts of the lighting sustainability standards to be completed in 2010.

These devices require a conductor to close the layers of active materials, but that conductor needs to be transparent in applications such as displays and photovoltaics to allow light through

Improving your lighting systems is one of the first steps EPA recommends to increase the efficiency of your buildings whether you are retrofitting existing buildings or designing new buildings. This is not only because lighting upgrades are so cost effective, but also because less heat is generated from efficient lighting systems, affecting the proper sizing of more capital-intensive heating and cooling systems. As outlined in the ENERGY STAR Building Upgrade Manual, a strategy that combines efficient lighting technologies, controls, and appropriate light levels is the most effective approach to meeting energy efficiency goals, including those required to qualify for the partial tax deduction. Read the Lighting Section, helpful information for lighting, don't forget to jump ahead of the curve, be a forward leaning, lean and mean energy machine, update to our state-of-the-art SMD LED Tubes and save 75% over standard Fluorescent Tubes.

You may qualify for a deduction of $0.60 per square foot if the lighting system employs dual switching (ability to switch roughly half the lights off and still have fairly uniform light distribution) and reduces installed lighting power by at least 25% from values specified in specific cited tables in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. As lighting power reductions climb from 25% to 40%, the deduction is increased proportionally, up to $0.60 for a 40% power reduction (plus the dual switching).

For a typical building, a lighting power reduction of 40% increases the building’s ENERGY STAR rating by about 10 points.

Lighting consumes close to 35 percent of the electricity used in commercial buildings in the United States and affects other building systems through its electrical requirements and the waste heat that it produces. Upgrading lighting systems with efficient light sources, fixtures, and controls can reduce lighting energy use, improve the visual environment, and affect the
sizing of HVAC and electrical systems.

CONSULT A TAX PROFESSIONAL

Confirm with your Tax Professional and take a (FROM)$.20to $0.60 per square foot deduction for improved lighting efficiency of 40% (with at switch that can turn off one/half of the lighting on command).

Q. What if my project cost exceeds the cap of $0.60/sq. ft.? How is the remaining cost treated tax-wise?

A. The remaining costs can be depreciated and claimed normally. So a qualifying project in a 100,000-sq.ft. building with a cost of $100,000 and 40% lighting power density savings could be eligible to deduct $60,000 in the taxable year the lighting is placed in service. The remaining $40,000 could then be claimed normally (i.e., capitalized and depreciated).

Q. What if a commercial building tenant performs a retrofit that would meet the energy savings, would they get the deduction?

A. Unfortunately, as in many matters of tax law, the answer is not necessarily clear. The person who gets the Commercial Buildings Deduction is the person who owns the property for tax purposes.

Although in many, if not most instances, a tenant improvement will revert to the landlord at the end of a lease, the property is not necessarily owned by the landlord for tax purposes. It is a question of fact, and the determination depends on the arrangements between the parties. If the tenant pays for the investment, constructs it according to its own specifications, and there are no concessions in the lease or from the landlord, it is likely that the tenant will be the owner of the improvements for tax purposes and eligible to claim the Commercial Buildings Deduction.

Fortunately, this is a question that arose under the tax law before the enactment of the Commercial Buildings Deduction provision. In the case of tenant improvements, the tenant and landlord would have to determine who the tax owner is for purposes of claiming depreciation deductions in any event. The Commercial Buildings Deduction does not change that determination. The Commercial Buildings Deduction simply provides a more beneficial deduction that that normally provided by depreciation. Perhaps a tenant should come to an agreement, in advance, with the landlord about who get the deduction, or how it is to be shared, consult your tax professional.

The analysis is the same regarding improvements in government buildings. If the contractor is the owner for tax purposes, it can claim the Commercial Buildings Deduction. Whether a private person can be an owner of property with respect to a government building under the applicable local law is a factor that would have to be taken into account in determining who the owner is for tax purposes.

ATG LED Lighting Electronics donated their i Bright™ T8 SMD LED Tubes to Evergreen Community Charter School.
The school installed i Bright™ LED to replace the conventional fluorescents. The retrofit installation is a great success from the feedback and test results listed below: Main installation is in the tutoring classroom.
Additional installation is in the main office visiting area.
Before retrofitting, the staffs were always complains of constant headaches from the overhead fluorescent s.
And now they love the LED's and have no headaches or eye strain. The school also did some tests to make comparison between i Bright LED and conventional fluorescents.
The tests were implemented as below:
1) Energy Saving Direct draw readings were taken at the switch leg for a total energy use number in the tutoring classroom. The fluorescent s were an average draw of 36.6 watts per lamp, and 16.8 watts per lamp for the LED's. For what it’s worth, these energy savings earned the school a great rebate, cash in pocket to use however they want.
2) Luminous Intensity Luminous intensity was tested by stationary light level readings. The average reading for the fluorescent s was 14.08 cd, and for the LED was 14.60 cd. About i Bright™ T8s iBright™ T8s LED Tubes are the next generation solution to replace conventional fluorescent light.

Sources of input voltage for LED arrays come from batteries or
power supplies that have a certain tolerance. An automotive
battery, for example, may supply 8V to 16V depending on the load
and the age of the battery. The "silver box" power supply inside a
desktop CPU may supply 12V ±10%.
High-brightness (HB) LEDs also give a range of forward voltage.
A typical HB LED might be characterized at a forward current
of 350 mA. The forward voltage of the LED when IF = 350 mA is
specified with a range that includes a typical value as well as
over-temperature maximum and minimum values. To ensure that
a true constant current is delivered to each LED in an array, the
power topology must be able to deliver an output voltage equal
to the sum of the maximum forward voltages of every device
placed in the string.
Manufacturers bin their devices for color, brightness, and
forward voltage. Binning for all three characteristics is
expensive, and forward voltage is often the specification that
is allowed to vary the most. Adding this to the shift in forward
voltage as the LED die temperature changes gives rise to the
need for constant-current regulators that have a wide range of
output voltage.
